It used to be ‘speak politely.’ Now it’s ‘speak three languages and we’ve got a deal.

Jul 25, 2025

Back then, ‘speak politely’ was the golden advice at every family table. In 2025, being polite isn’t enough. Now it’s: ‘Speak fluent English, passable German, and a lovable Dutch accent – and we’ll be in touch.’

According to eJobs, nearly 60% of all job listings in Romania this year ask for at least one foreign language. And no – it’s not just the polished corporate roles. Entry-level jobs are also knocking on the doors of multilingual talent.

“For white-collar roles, English is already a given. But even for blue-collar and junior positions, language requirements are becoming more common – though fluency isn’t always expected,” says Roxana Drăghici, Head of Sales at eJobs.

In numbers? English dominates with around 48,000 listings, German follows with 8,000+, French has over 3,400, and Italian counts 2,400 ads. And if you happen to speak something more ‘exotic’ like Portuguese, Turkish, Hungarian or Dutch – your salary can be 30% higher than average. That’s over 4,500 lei net.

Conclusion? Your mother tongue may be poetic, but it won’t take you far on LinkedIn. Multilingualism isn’t just cool anymore – it’s career currency. The more you speak, the more you can negotiate. So if “speak nicely” was the old rule, in 2025 it’s more like:
“Speak smart, in three languages minimum – and we’ve got a great offer for you.”
If not… well, maybe we’ll talk again – in Spanish, perhaps?
