Stand up for output

Sep 26, 2025

Can you boost your productivity without overtime? Yes – by breaking up long sitting with regular standing.

No harm, some gain

In a study of 167 call-center employees tracked over six months, those using stand-capable desks logged 23-53% more successfully completed calls than colleagues who remained seated (≈ 45% overall productivity lift). Results were based on real business KPIs, not self-reports.

Another three-month study in Japan (≈ 74 participants) found that introducing sit-stand desks significantly reduced sitting time, eased neck and shoulder pain, and was associated with higher “vitality” (work engagement) and better self-rated performance.

Why standing is a cheat code for energy

When you stop being glued to your chair and alternate with standing, you literally wake your body up. Postural muscles switch on, blood flows better, and your vessels respond healthily to that increased flow.

Standing also triggers inevitable micro-moves – a gentle sway, shifting your weight, a couple of steps – that burn a little energy and blunt the post-meal slump (more stable glucose/insulin), so you’re less likely to doze off.

At the same time, you change the pressure on your neck, shoulders, and lower back, which reduces the discomfort that steals your attention.

Long story short: better circulation, a steady trickle of movement, and less stiffness.

What do we mean by that?

The message isn’t “stand all day,” it’s “having the option – and alternate.” Jobs that require prolonged standing (e.g., nursing) carry a higher varicose-vein risk, so the smart approach is mixing positions, taking short breaks, using an anti-fatigue mat, and keeping desk/monitor heights set correctly.

Make quick stand-ups your daily ritual (10-15 minutes on your feet every hour) and we’ll see you at Connecting Careers recharged and ready to sprint.
